We can all agree that an organisation’s biggest challenge these days is to win the trust of its employees, business partners and customers. Earning it is crucial for building the foundations of sustainable success.

“Business is conducted through relationships and trust is the foundation of those relationships.”

Dennis S. Reina, PhD and Michelle L. Reina, PhD

We can also agree that relationships are only forged through connecting, putting communication at the core of any effort. Company leaders who communicate quickly and frequently and employ well planned and dedicated communication policies will encourage employees, partners and customers to trust the company.

Then why do most of us still struggle in employing efficient communication strategies? Well, it’s simple. Aside from a few trailblazing companies, and despite the awareness risen around leadership training, many of  companies as well as leaders still disregard its importance and necessity. I’ve seen many companies dismiss or hesitate to train their c-suite and quite a few leaders who attended my sessions without motivation or will to learn and change.

Communication plays significant role in building trust by creating an environment that boosts leaders’s efficiency as it motivates employees to work towards achieving the chief goal. It becomes very challenging to stimulate, involve and hold talent if the team members’s trust is not earned. But when the employees trust their leader and are aware of what is going on, they will be pleased with the trust bestowed on them by their inclusion, resulting in having an energized, well oriented and roundly knowledgable team. By sharing essential information with employees, leaders can develop a culture of trust and can easily build associations with employees and other business channels that facilitate organizations to grow faster.

Trust building activities include healthy communication management, having positive conversation about what else can be done and setting up an honest feedback loop. This is a long haul journey that requires perseverance but small results will start to show within a short period of time before reaping the ultimate fruit of all the effort, mutual trust. The trust of the people is what can mould mighty from modest and turn stone into sand.

A quick recap

Leadership Communication fundamentals

Leadership communication is first and foremost about exchange of meaning through verbal and non-verbal means. It  is the systematic and meaningful sharing of information through excellent skills in order to inspire and motivate individuals and groups. It is a complex process which starts from developing a communication strategy and mastering precise and effective writing and speaking to control thorny situations. Leadership communication has three major aspects: core, managerial, and corporate. Communication complexity increases with the increase in the level of leadership. So, leaders need to be innovative to become more effective and manage a wider array of situations.

Efficient improvisation and adaptation when you communicate as a leader can only happen if you first observe your team in order to understand them. You need to understand each of them individually as well as how they interact with the rest of the team. Then you can note any changes and the circumstances that triggered it.
